La Plaza Fountain

On Monday, December 5, 2011, the La Plaza Fountain was unveiled and dedicated in Dana Point. Commissioned and funded by the City of Dana Point, along with the estate of longtime resident and artist, Mary Ellen Thomas, this beautiful and illuminating (at night) fountain was created by Landscape Architect, Yvonne English and Artist, Lance Jost, and will serve as a landmark in our seaside community for years to come.

Lance & Jimi Hendrix Electric Lady Recording Studios

On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix celebrated the official opening of his Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s West Village. Artist Lance Jost was commissioned to paint the studio in a psychedelic space theme.  In the April 2010 Issue of Rolling Stone, David Fricke dives into Hendrix’s last days and lost recordings, tracing the epic plans and earthly troubles that marked the guitar god’s final months.

How I Got the Hendrix Mural Commission

Imagine me, a 29-year old unknown artist deeply entrenched in 1960’s Laguna Beach culture, not only getting a commission from Hendrix, but having the opportunity to paint a 100-foot long mural for Jimi’s recording studio in the heart of Greenwich Village.

Oddly enough, I got the commission through an introduction by surf icon and co-star of The Endless Summer, Mike Hynson. Hendrix agreed to score the music for Hynson’s brainchild, Rainbow Bridge, a film to be shot on the island of Maui over the summer of 1970. I was originally considered to create the credits for the movie, however, when Michael Jeffery saw my portfolio, he was so blown away he persuaded me to head east to the Village instead. The anticipation of meeting Hendrix at the San Diego Sports Arena on July 25, 1970 to show him my portfolio and get his approval was electric. Loaded to the teeth with cosmic artwork, I nailed it! Now all I needed to do was pack my bags and take off for New York City.

On Saturday, September 19th I was running a last errand before boarding the plane for New York when I ran into a friend in downtown Laguna. “Hey, Lance, did you hear that Hendrix died?”

And that’s just the beginning of the story.
